Artist blurs beach boundaries
Paul Fisher Gallery featured the work of Cheryl Maeder of West Palm Beach, in an exhibition, “Photographs: Dreamscapes,” through April 2, 2008.
Two bodies of works were shown: “Beach Series,” and “Sea & Sky.”
“Both series have the same feeling,” Maeder said. “But ‘Sea & Sky’ is more minimal in scope and has a feeling of tranquility/serenity.”
“Beach Series” was conceived on the coast of Spain. “Sea & Sky” was born here. On New Year’s day, 2008, she took her camera to the beach, she said.
“It was magical --absolutely calm and tranquil. Warm. Very serene. I could hear laughter. I started shooting, and I felt there was so much calmness between the sea, sky and the people. The sky and sea were like mirrors of each other. “Both bodies of works are current with me,” she said.
“In ‘Sea and Sky,’ there’s a more atmospheric quality to the images and the figures are more abstract. The transition from sea to sky is more minimal and conveys the feeling of no separation. “In “Beach Series” people and objects are more pronounced, but they are still abstract, she adds.
The subjects of sea, sky and beachgoer --all with blurred boundaries that mirror each other’s essence --pass through to viewer, too. Do you feel the pulse and energy of the three --the moving place where they melt into each other? And how would you describe that sensation? Does it feel like a fuzzy memory from childhood or a dream that is starting to fade? Do you want it to be in focus or do you enjoy the ambiguity?
Works such as these lend their impressions, energy, thoughtfulness to one’s interior decor.
The show ran through April 2, 2008 at the Paul Fisher Gallery, located in the Flamingo Building, 433 Flamingo Drive, West Palm Beach. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday and by appointment. Also exhibited were selected works of Dale Chihuly, Andy Warhol and Bruce Helander.
